How to Grocery Shop Like a Champ. Tips on How Be Healthy and Cost Effective

Monday, 26 February 2018 20:44

As I have gotten older I have come to really enjoy grocery shopping! I think about all delicious combos I know and love and all the world of possibilities I’ve yet to try. Also you get to enjoy the soft music and air conditioning that make grocery stores so inviting. But it is important that you don't let them trick you! Here are just a few tips I use when I go grocery shopping.

1.  Plan ahead

You can't accomplish a goal without laying out the steps that lead to success. This is true for food shopping as well. Your goals will change over time, but a common one people have is to be healthier. By meal planning you can decide ahead of time what to make. And when you plan ahead you have more time to think of healthy meals to try. It's also important to look through your kitchen before shopping to see what you have already. A source I like to use is the website On here you can tell them what ingredients you already have and they can suggest recipes to try out! This is a great way to use up what you already have without buying a ton of new items.

2. Work from the outside in

A good way to try and be healthier is to shop on the perimeter of the store.  This means going to the produce, dairy, meat, and grain sections first. This is where you'll find the least processed foods. Once you have gotten all your foods from the outside of the store, then you can venture into the aisles to complete your shopping. I find that sometimes I plan on getting something from the aisles, but once I start shopping and buy the fresh items I get encouraged to make the premade item I was planning on buying. An example would be making your own pasta sauce. While you could buy the processed version from the aisle, you could also buy fresh tomatoes and spices to make your own sauce that is more delicious and healthier!

3. Try frozen produce

Fresh is always best, right? While that is true of some produce, there are some that are just as healthy and delicious frozen. Look for vegetables that are flash frozen at peak freshness to find the best options. I like doing this especially when the bags of frozen veggies are on sale. I can stock up on healthy foods that I can pull out and eat on nights I don't have anything ready to make. While it is most common to steam or microwave frozen veggies, did you know you could also roast them in the oven? What I like to do is take a bag of frozen veggies right from the bag and put them on a baking sheet. I drizzle olive oil on then and whatever seasonings I have and put them in the oven at around 400 degrees for about 40 minutes.  Just as delicious as roasting fresh veggies!
